Built in 1846 and turned into a backpackers hostel in 1997, we have packed this grand old building full of art, character and antiquity. Some people say it is more an art gallery or museum than a hostel. We think you will love it with our bright, sunny and spacious rooms and great facilities like FREE Wi-Fi, a movie room, a delightful patio and a fire place for those cold winter nights as well as plenty of room to kick back and relax or join in the fun with other travelers.

Nothing to say, it's the cliché of the perfect hostel. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is warm. The decoration incredible. The rooms were very quiet despite a dormitory of 16 people being very full. The common areas are cozy and spacious. The bathroom is a little small for all these people but it wasn't a problem for our night spent there. I highly recommend it. The only improvement I could suggest is to isolate the beds from each other visually a little more (a small wall at the head level for example). Otherwise nothing to complain about, we would have liked to stay longer!
This youth hostel is really well located in the center of Edinburgh we were able to do everything on foot during our 4 day stay. The whole team is great, the rooms are clean as well as the bathrooms. The shared kitchen is very useful, you can store your groceries and it is very well equipped, you won't miss anything. Entertainment offered every evening
It is in the heart of Edinburgh. Possibility of breakfast for a small price. Very clean and quiet. Friendly staff.

I spent a top week in the hostel which is friendly and very well placed. The lounges are pleasant, the bedrooms are very good and you can work there for the hostel 14 hours a week if you stay there for a minimum of one month. This allows you to pay for the nights each time. The hostel also organizes daily activities, parties, beer pong, pub crawl, cinema...
I stayed here for one night, it was perfect. The place is very pleasant, large kitchen, living rooms. The location is just perfect.
I had a wonderful stay at this hostel. The location is perfect, the staff is welcoming and attentive. The evenings offered allow you to meet travellers. The rooms are clean and spacious. Lockers allow you to store your belongings and the bedding is comfortable.
Great ! We had a lovely time ! Staff was caring and really nice.
Well-equipped hostel (sockets at each bed, lockers that can be locked, comfortable beds), well located (view of the castle), responsive staff, the common rooms are clean and well appointed. Breakfast is cheap (£2.50) and good. Could be improved with an addition of curtains at bed level for more private space and privacy. I highly recommend this hostel.
The facilities are very good, the hostel is cozy and has everything you need. The location is ideal! The breakfast option for £2.50 is great The guys at the reception were very kind to us and helped us organize our route through the Highlands
In France unexpensive hostel means sad and dull environment (e.g. hotels Formule 1) but here in Scotland they are actually fun and cheerful!
Friendly and warm
The place is beautiful! Employees and customers are all nice! The rooms are large and well appointed. The place is cleaned twice a day. wow!
Me and my cousin stayed in Castle Rock Hostel for 3 nights and it was a good place with great decoration and cool people.
thank you so much
Hostel located near the castle and in the heart of Edinburgh, super pretty and cozy place!
I can only say good! Beautiful environment stormed by artists who decorated it to wish! Affordable price ... Staff, really friendly and open !!!! I do not see any flaws! Only the regret of not being stopped any longer m'immlupine it is not more beautiful experience in hostel!
Pleasant, friendly hostel, very well located.
The hostel is superb! The location is perfect (central, exceptional view). Small flaws: the toilets are closed in the middle of the day, the cleaning staff are extremely noisy even if some occupants were sleeping.
This hostel is really huge with several lounges, kitchens ... But it is still very friendly where life is good! I really loved to spend my evenings there reading in the living room, playing guitar or billiards ... In addition there are plenty of parties organized where you can meet people and if you want to stay only it's totally possible too !!
I had a very nice stay in this warm and more than comfortable hostel. Activities organized every night from Monday to Saturday can meet other travelers, in short I recommend 100%!
Very nice hostel, very well located (literally at the foot of the castle), a minute walk from the Royal Mile, and all, really cheap! Good atmosphere, there are activities offered almost every night, the staff is approachable and lovely, and the places are clean! Everything is in a medieval style, almost castle for the entry, then each room / dormitory to his theme, I love it! I booked a girls room, and although we were 12, everything was clean, quiet and respectful, frankly I'm delighted! I recommend with eyes closed!
Great
Very well located, but be careful it goes up!
Very well
Good
- Staff were friendly and helpful with activities to do in Edinburgh and would look things up for you if you weren't sure where they were located - Rooms were clean and well kept, with a storage locker for valuables - Common room was clean and busy most of the time creating a good vibe
I really liked the location of the place, the showers and the very spacious and beautiful rooms. The boys of the divine reception all !!
Location Service + helpfulness Common shower and toilet faclities Check in and check out process Recommendable!
Its a nice and cosy hostel with very nice staff
The most perfect hostel I've ever been! I was traveling with my parents and a bit worried if they would mind staying in a hostel, which is a bit informal sometimes. But they simply loved it. The decoration, the friendliness of the staff, the facilities, even our room in the last floor though we had some luggage. Great stay!!
Loved staying at Castle Rock. The staff were so friendly and on the door 24 hours so no worries if you need help at any time. Daily suggestions of what's good to do in the city as well as some entertainment for stayers. Party atmosphere available, but if it's not your thing there are heaps of spaces to relax. Would stay again
The location is too good to be true. The character of the property is amazing. You have to stay here if you are staying at a hostel.
The location, helpfulness of the staff.
Very friendly staff.
Nice location, quite near the Castle, and has a big kitchen with all the facilities , people there are really friendly, the common places are spacious and beautifully decorated.
Best hostel in town. Fantastic location right besides the castle. The staff is very helpful, friendly and imaginative in giving travel advice. Great discount at local pubs too.
Great hostel in the middle of the city
Hands down best hostel in Edinburgh. I regret that we could only stay one night! It was booked full the second night so we moved to another hostel and it was just not the same.
Really central location and really kind people
A stay that full with character is a super amazing experience!
The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful at all times. I had a major issue with my mattress, it was so thin I woke up in a LOT of pain every day. After the second night, I reported it and asked for a second mattress. Turns out my mattress was so thin they had to throw it away!
Good location. Staffs are helpful and friendly.
Amazing location, great facilities and fun atmosphere!
The location is really cool, right opposite the castle, and it is set up to look a bit castle-like with a knight's costume set up in the corridor. All the rooms have a theme as well with the beds named after the theme. There is a locker under the bed with an additional "safe" compartment
Fantastic location, well organised and all staff were very friendly and helpful
Staff, building, location, atmosphere, facilities, breakfast, free coffee and milk, everything is great in this hostel! I definitely recommend it as one of the best hostel you could stay at! And I have been at many..
Castle Rock was an excellent hostel, the location is great especially if you are visiting for the fringe festival. There is a large kitchen with a number of fridges so there is plenty of room for your food. The rooms are all very well kept and the beds are clean and comfortable, I was staying in a 16 bed dorm however the rooms are set up to still allow you some privacy which was great. The showers and bathrooms are regularly cleaned and the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Castle Rock is definitely one of the best hostels I have stayed in.
The hostel is very well located and we loved its athmosphere. It has different common areas, some to chill out and some to socialise. There are also some activities organised within the hostel (language exchange, games..). The views from the dinning room are amazing, it was very pleasant chilling out there with a coffee! I would deffinitely recommend it!
A really good hostel and nice rooms. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Cheap and simple breakfast.
Fun place
This hostel is one of the best I ever slept in !
A wonderful stay!
Avoid on weekend
Excellent
Highly recommendable
